If you plan it, they will come.
Summer is not a time for lazy days of
doing nothing at The Children’s Home of Lubbock. The students
have been extremely busy the first six weeks of this summer. While
the older teens have been working on campus or in town, the younger
children have been expanding their horizons through our summer
education programs.
TNT is for young people
who are going into 6-8th grades. These students have been researching
medieval times and the early renaissance. They have made soap,
chalk sticks and studied the design and purpose of castles. In
Da Vinci’s Worskshop they participate in perspective drawings,
artwork, science concepts and music. Field trips give the kids
the opportunity to visit museums, technology centers, learn about
water conservation and service at the South Plains Food Bank.
3rd-5th graders participate in SOS.
Medieval times were studied in a room decorated like Shakespeare’s
Globe Theatre, where drama, puppets and fun plays were utilized.
Misbehaving for a substitute teacher on one occasion provided
the opportunity to teach knightly virtues like chivalry, proper
treatment of others, how to treat the poor, loyalty and honor.
They built suits of armour and helmets from cardboard and foil
and wore them on a "quest" which took them searching
around the campus while practicing the knightly virtues.
FAST is provided for
First And Second graders to help them remember what they have
learned in school and to provide a good foundation for the next
school year. Since most of the children at the Home are 1-2 years
behind in school skills this is a very important part of our summer
activities.
During the week of July 11-15, 57 kids
headed for White River Youth Camp for a week
of fellowship, Bible study, crafts, and the experience of being
out of their comfort zones and learning to depend on each other
and on God.
