The Give Thanks Dinner Thanksgiving
is a special time at The Children's Home of Lubbock, as it is for
all families. Seven years ago, the students, working with the staff
of the recreation department, initiated a new tradition here on
campus that has become a very special time on its own: The Give
Thanks Dinner.
About a week before Thanksgiving,
the students work with the recreation staff to put on a dinner to
honor their houseparents. They work together to cook the food, to
decorate the tables, and to serve the meal.
Each cottage group works
together to prepare a special presentation of appreciation to their
houseparents. Some students write poems or letters to tell what
their staff means to them. Others prepare songs or skits. Many will
either make something special or pool their allowances to purchase
something to present to those who lovingly care for them throughout
the year.
The night is always loud.
There is plenty of laughter, lots of hugs, and seldom a dry eye
in the house. What a wonderful way to set the mood for Thanksgiving!
