Michael (15), like many
of our children, had experienced some of the darker sides of this
life. And like many who are victims, he had been lead to believe
that much of it had been his fault.
He met Jesus in the caring
touch of many people. He began reading the Bible as a result of
encouragement from his teachers and his youth minister at Church
and Ed/Rec and Cottage Staff at Childrens Home.
Often he would bring
up questions of a spiritual nature in counseling sessions with his
Unit Director, Todd Patten. As a result, they engaged in in-depth
Bible studies about how a person could develop a relationship with
Jesus. They talked about Gods grace and redemption. He learned
that in baptism there is not only forgiveness of sins but a welcome
into the family of God.
The time came when Michael
decided to give his life to Christ. As we talked about the significance
of the act of baptism, how a person comes out of the water completely
new -- free from the guilt of sin, Michael said, "Really, I just
thought I would have to carry them along with me!"
The relief was obvious
in his face when he was assured that Jesus takes all of those burdens
from us.
"Come to me, all you
that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you
rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle
and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For
my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)
